This fungus was observed on sugarcane using Foldscope. Me and my daughter took a sample from semi dried cross sectional portion at one end. We also tried white and black powdery substance on the outside but couldn’t see anything.
It can be challenging to get batteries for Foldscope light unit. This is a workaround by creating a DIY backlight using a white LED and any 3.3v coin cell which is easier to find. Also attached is image taken using this technique.
Looked through my foldscope after a long time. Images of fungus growing on dry plant stem. Looks like there are 3 different types of them.

Taro stem cross section seen through a foldscope. In the third image it looks like a water droplet is magnifying a strand of tissue (or just some optics playing tricks !)
